There’s something about traveling a distance from your homeland which strengthens your resolve to maintain, affirm & celebrate your roots. The Kirkin’ of the Tartans at the 11.00 a.m. service at Scots Church yesterday proved this truth. The front of the church was awash with tartans from numerous clans men & women. I found myself chatting to people from all over Scotland who had just been back to Scotland or were about to go. Yet, there were also many others, who can trace some line of heritage to the Scots pioneers, who'd turned up wearing their own tartan. I didn’t have my kilt but wore my Urquhart tartan tie with pride! Also joining in God’s praise were people from all over the world without Scottish roots, giving a radiant reflection of the glorious, multi-colored tartan of God’s Family, a clan united by the blood of Jesus! We sang Michael Baughen’s hymn ‘We worship God in harmony’ to the tune ‘Auld Lang Syne’. The last verse, with the multi-million dollar pipe organ’s blast, choir’s swell & congregation’s wholehearted singing was awesome!
Chorus:
In Jesus Christ our Lord and king,
in Jesus Christ our Lord,
the Spirit makes us all as one
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
One day we’ll see him face to face,
to him we’ll bow the knee;
we’ll never say goodbye again –
the best is yet to be!
Truly Tartanic!!!
